  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg Can substitute with cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup butter (melted) Coconut oil can replace for dairy-free
  • 2 large eggs No substitutes recommended
  • 3/4 cup milk Buttermilk or almond milk can be used
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Almond extract can be swapped
  • for frying as needed oil (vegetable or canola) Do not use olive oil

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together melted butter, eggs, milk, and vanilla extract.
  3. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined.
  4. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  5. After chilling, roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thick and cut into donut shapes.
  6. Heat oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C) and ensure the temperature is constant.
  7. Fry donuts in batches for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  8. Remove donuts and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve warm, optionally topped with glaze or cinnamon sugar.
