Ingredients

For the Filling
  • 6 cups medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced Use a mix of sweet and tart varieties for optimal flavor.
  • ¾ cup sugar Can reduce for lower sweetness.
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour Optional: can substitute with cornstarch for a gluten-free version.
  • ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon Adjust based on personal preference.
  • ¼ teaspoon salt Enhances overall sweetness and balances flavor.
  • teaspoon ground nutmeg Can substitute with allspice if unavailable.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Brightens flavor and prevents browning of apple slices.
For the Crust
  • 1 recipe double pie crust Store-bought works as a time-saver if needed.
  • 2-3 tablespoons butter Provides richness; sprinkle over apples before adding top crust.

Equipment

  • 9-inch pie plate
  • Mixing bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking sheet
  • Wire Rack

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Prepare the pie crust by rolling out your double pie crust on a lightly floured surface. Fit the bottom crust into a 9-inch pie plate.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, toss apple slices with sugar, flour, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Let the filling sit for about 10 minutes.
  3. Take the chilled pie crust from the refrigerator, spoon the apple filling into the crust and spread it. Dot with small pieces of butter.
  4. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Bake the assembled pie on a baking sheet for 15 minutes, then reduce temperature to 375°F (190°C) and bake for another 30 minutes.
  5. Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for about 2 hours.
