Ingredients

For the Base
  • 1 box Yellow Cake Mix Try chocolate or lemon mixes for a fun twist.
  • ½ cup Unsalted Butter Melted; coconut oil makes a great dairy-free substitute.
  • 1 large Egg A flax egg is perfect for a vegan version.
For the Toppings
  • 1 cup Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips Milk or dark chocolate chips can be used interchangeably.
  • 1 cup Toffee Bits Such as Heath; crushed candy bars work in a pinch.
  • ½ cup Chopped Pecans/Walnuts Optional; feel free to skip for a nut-free treat.
For the Cream Layer
  • ¼ teaspoon Salt Balances the sweetness perfectly.
  • ½ teaspoon Vanilla Extract Elevates the overall flavor profile beautifully.
  • 14 oz Sweetened Condensed Milk For dairy-free, use sweetened condensed coconut milk.

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking pan
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • spatula
  • Wire Rack

Method

Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9x13-inch baking pan by greasing it or lining it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the yellow cake mix, melted unsalted butter, and large egg. Stir until it forms a thick batter, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Press 2/3 of the thick cake batter into the bottom of the prepared baking pan.
  4. Sprinkle semi-sweet chocolate chips and toffee bits evenly over the pressed base layer. Optionally, add chopped pecans or walnuts on top.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth. Pour this layer over the toppings in the baking pan.
  6. Crumble the remaining cake batter over the top of the condensed milk mixture.
  7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the edges turn golden-brown and the center is set. Keep an eye on it after 25 minutes.
  8. Let the bars cool completely in the pan on a wire rack, about 1-2 hours. Once cool, slice into 15 squares.
