Step-by-Step Instructions for Epic Black Bean Burger
  1. Begin by draining and rinsing your black beans in a colander until the water runs clear, about 1-2 minutes.
  2. In a medium skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and minced garlic, sautéing for 3-4 minutes until soft and fragrant.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the rinsed black beans and the sautéed onion-garlic mixture. Mash until mostly smooth with some chunks remaining for texture.
  4. Stir in breadcrumbs, egg (or flaxseed meal), cumin, chili powder, salt, pepper, and cilantro. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
  5. With clean hands, divide the mixture into equal portions and shape into patties about 1 inch thick.
  6. In the same skillet, heat an additional 2 tablespoons of oil over medium-high heat. Cook each side of the patties for 4-5 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove the burgers from the skillet and let them rest. Serve on buns with your favorite toppings like avocado or salsa.
