Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Wash 4-6 Granny Smith apples thoroughly under cool water. Chop apples into small chunks, keeping skin on.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves (3-5 minutes).
  3. Add chopped apples, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, and a pinch of salt to syrup. Stir together and simmer for about 15 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and let cool for about 10 minutes. Strain syrup through a fine-mesh strainer into a measuring cup.
  5. Stir in optional ingredients like citric acid and green food coloring. Mix thoroughly.
  6. In a pitcher, combine 3-4 tablespoons of syrup with 4-6 cups of chilled sparkling water. Stir gently.
